Jenny Doležel's painting

Boathouse co-owner Tony Papas met New Zealand artist Jenny Doležel in the 1980s and collected a number of her paintings and drawings. When Tony was planning the fitout of The Boathouse he invited Jenny to create the fish icon (in the bottom corner of these pages) and to paint the large screens which greet guests in the foyer of the restaurant.

Tony explains, ‘Part of the brief was that the work was to become part of the architecture with a story relating to my vision of what The Boathouse would become, make the work a bit challenging with some of that dark feel that Jenny can get, and to have something which is unique to the restaurant.’

Jenny came to Sydney to paint the mural. Tony recalls numerous picnics at The Boathouse while the work was underway, discussing with Jenny his plans for the look and feel of the restaurant and the type and style of food he intended to serve. But for seven months Jenny guarded the door and kept Tony out of her makeshift studio while she finished the painting!
